Personal Learning Network?
Anyone out there have their own Personal Learning Network? I'm working to figure out how to create my own and would like to find out what people are using. Are you a blogger? Are you a tweeter? Do you make Facebook connections? Do you bookmark your educational favorites on Delicious? Are you a Pinterester? I'd like to hear some of the ways that you are building your collaboration with other educators. Share away and let's help each other!
I am a Pinterester, blogger, and Facebooker! I actually saw an awesome idea for a classroom library today on Facebook from Pinterest. All of the bookshelves were painted a different color. Each color represented a different reading level.
ReplyDeleteI would say that this blog would be considered your Personal Learning Network. You are reaching out to teachers through your blog to learn from them.
I love the idea about the bookshelves - let's get painting this summer! :-) I need to follow you on Pinterest! Thank you for checking out my blog and for taking the time to comment. Check back often - I will try my best to continue with new and interesting posts, questions, and comments.
DeleteHi Ms. Lukes,
ReplyDeleteFunny that you should ask! I'm presenting at a conference in May on this very topic. My demographic is community college teachers in the Pacific Northwest, but my goal is to share ideas as much as I can with other teachers. I'm pretty new at researching/building PLNs, and I got started by enrolling in ETMOOC (etmooc.org). Part of the class is to create a blog and a Twitter account in order to connect with other students. It's been an amazing experience of learning (when I have the time). In addition, I joined Diigo this fall, and I haven't even begun using all of the connections I've made with this social bookmarking tool. I have a link right on my toolbar, so I bookmark and label what's of interest to me as I'm reading it. I have also joined Pinterest, which is how I found you. I've created a wiki to share some of my ideas when I've done presentations with an eye towards creating a website. I'm with Bridget here. There is no set definition of what a network should be, so we are in a creative position to make it what we want. I connect everything to my blog, and that helps me feel less overwhelmed by the options. There are only so many hours in the day. I see my PLN as something fun and interesting as a break from my work as a teacher. These are a few of my ideas, so I hope this helps:)

Alyson,
DeleteI was delighted to read your message this morning! You are my first "unknown" connection and I'm a little giddy about it! I am currently taking an "Instructional Technology" course and am learning all kinds of new things. Before this course, I considered myself pretty knowledgeable about technology... but low and behold, I'm finding out that I wasn't even sitting anywhere near the iceberg, much less, at the top of the iceberg! I haven't joined Diigo yet, but I have been working on building sites on Delicious. Of course, I spend WAY too much time on Pinterest... it's a nice distraction if I need a break from class assignments. I was intimidated by the idea of a PLN at first, but I'm beginning to see the "fun and interesting" stuff you are talking about. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas!
Ms. Lukes-
ReplyDeleteI use my blog, Google+, and Pinterest as my PLN. I joined several communities on Google+ and any time I post on my blog, I link to it through my Google+ communities. Sometimes people from my communities will comment directly on my blog post or they will comment on the link through Google+, but it has definitely increased my blog traffic to more than just our classmates. Plus, many of the people that are part of my Google+ communities also have blogs, so I spend time looking through those and bookmarking them. You can do a Google+ account through your Morningside e-mail! Like you, I spend way to much time on Pinterest, too! Good luck with your PLN and if you join Google+, make sure to add me to your circles!
Mrs. Krumm,
ReplyDeleteI haven't done any exploring on Google+ but it sounds like it would be worth my while to take come time and do that. Our school uses Gmail, so I think it would be a great way to make connections. Thank you for taking the time to comment - and if I do decide to use Google+, I will definitely add you!
Thanks,
Helen
